October 2011 - United Way of Sarnia-Lambton

Organization:  United Way of Sarnia-Lambton

History:  United Way of Sarnia-Lambton is perhaps the most innovative United Way in Canada!  We continue to meet our goals and objectives annually thanks to hundreds of volunteers throughout Lambton County!  Registered in 1957, The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton is a member of approximately 124 United Ways of United Way/Centraide Canada; one of 46 United Ways in Ontario and a member of the United Ways of the Ontario Southwest Region.   In addition to participating in various United Way of Canada activities, we are an active participant in many United Way World Wide initiatives as well including trainning and conferences.

Mission: "To improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action."

Focus:  Community impact - the achievement of positive long-term changes to the quality of life in local communities which is brought about by addressing the root causes of social problems, as well as their symptoms.

Things You Can Do: There are two fundamental ways you can help the community through the United Way. The United Way needs donors and volunteers.

Nominated Because: "I'd like to nominate the United Way for the support they provide to our local organizations, specifically the Ontario March of Dimes.  Their assistance helps provide access to assistive devices, giving people the opportunity to live more active and independent lives." - Cynthia Bell
