February 2012 - Women's Interval Home of Sarnia-Lambton

Organization:  Women's Interval Home of Sarnia-Lambton

Mission: To provide an immediate, safe alternative to an abusive family setting for women and children, and to enhance personal dignity by working towards the elimination of family violence.

Motto: It is a basic human right to live without fear of abuse.

Focus: To interrupt the cyclical pattern of violence in present and future generations; encourage the adoption of more effective, non-violent communication within the family;  provide women and children with a safe and supportive environment in which to define their own needs, make decisions, and work towards the achievement of personal goals; act as a liaison and advocate for families with the existing community service network; increase public awareness and understanding of the problem of family violence; and strive to improve the quality of life for women, children and the society in which they live through the elimination of family violence.

Programs & Services:  The Emergency Shelter provides a place to go, individual and group counseling for women and children, safety planning, support, advocacy and referral services.  Through the Transitional Support & Housing Program women are provided the assistance and resources they need to rebuild and live a violence-free, independent life.  From resources to job placement assistance, W.O.M.E.N.  is an employment readiness program offering skills to move from just getting by to getting ahead.  24 hour crisis/support line, Child Witness Program, Support Groups and the Youth Relationship Project are also offered.

Things You Can Do: Financial donations are always helpful, but the women served by the Women's Interval Home often require items needed for everyday life.  Donations of gently used women’s and children’s clothing, Non-perishable food, New or gently used toys, School supplies, Toiletries, Diapers, Household items, Bedding and towels are all very much appreciated.  You can also volunteer by offering shelter maintenance assistance, helping with a special event or assisting with child care activities.

Nominated Because: "The services provided by the Women's Interval Home are immeasurable.  They provide resources, skills and support that change the lives of women and families forever.  I felt broken, but they taught me to believe in myself and, with their incredible help, I was able to rebuild my life and I know they will continue to do the same for every women they meet." ~ Anonymous
