April 2012 - Sarnia Community Foundation

Organization: Sarnia Community Foundation

Mission: To create opportunities for people who care about the community to establish endowment funds that will make a difference forever by supporting local charitable causes. For Good...For Community...For Ever

History: Since 1983 the Sarnia Community Foundation has made an impact on over 125 local organizations and thousands of people in the community. Beginning with the first grants in 1985 the Foundation has served the community by granting to many projects and programmes in the area making an impact on education, children and youth, social services, arts and culture, seniors, healthcare and the environment.  Those grants have provided more than two million dollars to towards delivering projects and programmes that enhance the quality of life in our community.

Programs: Simply stated a community foundation works to build a better community.  The foundation: works with donors to build endowment funds that will ensure a future for community projects and programmes; grants funds to the widest possible range of organizations and initiatives; and brings people together from all parts of the community to stimulate new ideas, build participation and strengthen community philanthropy.

While there are many organizations working for better communities, a few important factors make your Community Foundation special: bringing donors to the table as community builders, and help them formulate and realize their philanthropic goals; taking the broadest view of what a community is and what it needs to succeed; and striving to identify long-term needs and opportunities and invest in sustainable solutions.

Things You Can Do: Become a donor.  As a donor to a community foundation, you can contribute to an already established fund or create one of your own. Many donors choose to target an area of interest such as: children, youth, seniors, health, arts & culture, recreation, education, environment and/or social services. If you choose to establish your own fund it can be named or remain anonymous. Your direction is all that is needed to make a lasting impact.

You can also be a part of the Sarnia Community Foundation by volunteering for a special event, in the office or with the Board of Directors.

Nominated Because: "The Sarnia Community Foundation supports the organizations in our community that provide vital services.  They not only fund programs and activities, they provide leadership and direction to those who need it." ~ Miranda Hadley
