Name:  The "Tuesday Ladies": Barb McEwen, Cheryll Kuhwald and Linda Dobson

Number of Years Volunteering: A combined 14 years of volunteering

Organization: The Breast Cancer Society of Canada

Barb McEwen: Barb is a 25 year breast cancer survivor and has been offering volunteer services with the Breast Cancer Society of Canada for the past year and a half.   She started volunteering on Tuesdays in the spring of 2010 at a time when helping hands were very much needed in preparation for the BCSC’s annual golf tournament and auction.  Barb says she "admires the resourcefulness and dedication of the five women who manage the national BCSC office and enjoys being a part of such a wonderful team".

Barb is married, a mother of two children and a grandmother of 4 grandchildren, all who live next door as my neighbours.

Cheryll Kuhwald:  In 2001, Cheryll chose to volunteer at the Breast Cancer Society of Canada because she herself is a breast cancer survivor. She started by taking home silk ribbons to cut and pin.  After retirement in 2002, Cheryll volunteered on Tuesdays and sometimes Thursdays. She says she "always felt welcome by the staff and as a breast cancer survivor it was a comforting place to be. I also felt like I was making a contribution in the fight against this disease".  Cheryll served on the board of directors from 2002-2004. She has been involved in the Mother’s Day Walk since 2003 and have been on the committee for the annual memorial gold tourney for many years.

Cheryll says she will continue to volunteer because "it is important to me to feel I am doing something constructive and useful towards finding a cure".

Linda Dobson:  In 2007, Linda began volunteering every Tuesday just as her best friend finished treatment for breast cancer. Supporting an organization that funds research to find a cure was very important to her.  Linda says she is "very impressed with the dedication and work performed by the small staff and recognize how critical the assistance of volunteers are in helping the BCSC continue to grow and fund new research initiatives across the country".

Linda retired early from Nova Chemicals after 27 years of service. Married for 43 years, she has 2 lovely daughters, 3 beautiful granddaughters and one terrific grandson.

Tip for Volunteers:
Barb: "When looking to offer volunteer services make sure you are totally connected to whatever you choose to do and love being involved with it. If you are happy to be offering help to a cause then it`s easy to take on and learn new tasks or offer extra hours of assistance."

Cheryll: "Select an organization with whom you have a connection, passion or personal experience with. When starting out, be clear about what types of duties you are willing to help with.  In my case, I was  ready to take on whatever needed to be done because I feel that everything I help out with saves the organization time and money."

Linda: "Choose an organization that has special meaning to you or one that is small and has difficulty finding volunteers. You should look to provide tasks in either your specific area of expertise (work experience) or something that you love doing and will offer fulfillment to you and others. The time you can offer will be dependent upon your lifestyle and other commitments/interests, however, most organizations are very grateful for the help and will be very flexible to accommodate any time schedule that works for you."

Nominated by: "The Breast Cancer Society of Canada would like to nominate Linda, Barb and Cheryll for their dedication, hard work and valuable contribution to our organization. These wonderful ladies spend every Tuesday with us doing just about whatever we throw at them!  Along with keeping us organized  in the office we  also value their ideas, opinions and feedback knowing that they have the best interest of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada at heart!"

Thank you to the "Tuesday Ladies" for all you do in our community!

Volunteer of the Month is presented by Starbucks Canada Store 4772-Sarnia, located at 1273 London Rd.
