What is Volunteering?

Every year millions of Canadians give their time, energy and skills as volunteers. Volunteering is an important part of this country and it happens in many ways. Helping family, friends and neighbours is an informal way people volunteer. Volunteering with a charity or in a non-profit organization is a formal way to volunteer and usually involves an organized application and screening process. In both cases, volunteers offer their help of their own free will and receive no financial payment for their time.

Volunteers can be found in almost every part of Canadian society including:

  • Animals/Animal Services
  • Arts and culture
  • Children & Youth
  • Community Development
  • Emergency/Crisis Services
  • Environment
  • Health & Wellness
  • Social Services & Justice
