A- A+

I can't volunteer because:

  • I don't have the time
There is no requirement for how much time you must volunteer. Each opportunity varies and many organizations are willing to work with you and be flexible with their hours.
  • I can't speak English well enough
Volunteering is a great opportunity to practice your language skills and learn from those around you.
  • I need to work/find a job
Although the volunteer opportunity may not result directly in a job, you will learn valuable skills and have the opportunity to network with members of the community.
  • I don't have transportation to get to a volunteer placement
Public transportation is always available and if you are concerned about being too far from home you can always search for a volunteer opportunity using our Map Search so you can stay close.
  • I don't have anyone to watch my children while I volunteer
If child care is a concern, why not look for a family volunteer opportunity. You can spend time with your children and they will also have the opportunity to give back to the community.
  • I don't know where to start looking for a place to volunteer
You've already made the first step in finding a place to volunteer: use our Criteria Search, Map Search, Browse opportunities or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for assistance.
  • The process and paperwork seem too complicated
Do not let the feeling of being overwhelmed deter you. Organizations can help you with paper work as can local settlement agencies or you canThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for assistance.
  • I can't afford the cost of getting a criminal record or police check
To lessen the cost, organizations will provide you with a letter stating that you are requesting the police check for a volunteer opportunity.
  • I won't be welcomed as a volunteer
Volunteers are always welcome. Sarnia-Lambton has a long history of volunteering and we are always excited to welcome new people that are willing to give back to the community.

People have very good reasons for not volunteering, however; keep in mind that many organizations depend on volunteers to be successful. These organizations will work with you to overcome these difficulties. Just ask!
