Feb_-_Rina

Name:  Rina Barker

Number of Years Volunteering: 15

Organization: Canadian Cancer Society and various Sarnia-Lambton organizations

Activities:  Over the past 5 years, Rina has put her  efforts into special events.  From volunteer to fundraiser to coordinator, she saw an opportunity to put her skills to work and benefit the organizations she is passionate about.  In 2011 Rina was a fundraiser and advocate for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. Most recently, Rina combined her job and her passion for the Canadian Cancer Society to coordinate the Minute to Win It Challenge event in support of Pediatric Cancer Research.  The first time event was a success and Rina now hopes it will become an annual activities for families and community members.

How It All Started:  Rina have been fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society for the last 15 years. It was the diagnosis of first her uncle and then her dad that lead her to start.  She says, "cancer has taken several people from my life in the last 15 years that I would really like to help put an end it for good."  It is that desire to be a part of the solution that lead to this year's fundraiser for Pediatric Cancer Research. Rina says, "we thought we should start with those who needed to be protected the most...our children".

Tip for Volunteers:  "Sometimes it is hard to contribute to several different charities, so I have chosen the organization that has personally effected me the most in life.  With the strides that the Canadian Cancer Society has made in the last 20 years, 62% of people diagnosed with cancer will now survive the disease compared with the 1 and 3 survival rate of the 1960's. Although cancer is not 100% curable, figures such as these prove to me that the charitable donations made to CCS are used in making progress towards cancer being a more treatable disease. I encourage everyone to find a cause you are passionate about, do the research and then stand up for what you believe in and make a difference."

Nominated by: "In the 7 months that I've worked with Rina her passion for our community has been obvious.  She is always participating in fundraisers and events and encouraging those around her to step-up and do the same.  She
