Every month Sarnia Gives & Starbucks Canada celebrate the hard work and dedication that a Sarnia-Lambton community member has shown by giving back. If you know someone that should be recognized, please nominate here.
Name: Steve Locke
Number of Years Volunteering: 37
Organization: Scouts Canada
Activities: Steve is the Group Commissioner and Troop Scouter for 5th Sarnia. That means he not only takes car of the admininistrations side of the group, he also runs the Scout Troop. The 5th was re-started 3 years ago and is going strong with 35 youth, 14 Leaders and 6 support adults. Steve is also the Assistant Area Commissioner for Training. He sets up adult training courses for Leaders and recruit teams to run them. If that's not enough, Steve is the camp chief for an International Jamboree that runs every second year and has done so since they started in 1994. 650 people will be coming from Canada, the USA, Ireland and Africa for the event in July. As a part of a May "Camporee" Steve runs a silent Auction that raises money for the World Brotherhood fund to assist youth in Scouting in developing countries. Lastly, in addition to his carious Scouting duties, Steve is also on the Board of Directors for St. Clair Child & Youth.
Steve says that he's very fortunate to have a very understanding employer, which allows him to take part in all of these activities.
How It All Started: After speending 11 great years as a youth in the program, Steve wanted to give back to Scouting as a Leader. He says, "I felt I owed a debt. It’s been a great 37 years as an adult and I feel I owe more now than when I started. It’s been a very rewarding experience".
Tip for Volunteers: "When you join, plan on being around for the long haul. You will likely be very pleasantly surprised that over the journey you can expect to get a great deal of satisfaction and it seems you get back more than you put in. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience as well as wonderful way to meet new people."
Nominated by: "In my opinion, there is no one who works harder and puts in more hours for Scouts Canada in this area then Steve Locke. Currently he is running the only group in Sarnia which caters to underprivileged youth. He has been a driving force in this area for Scouts Canada for a very long time and I think he deserves great recognition." ~ Doug Henry
